Students with children

Pregnancy, birth and upbringing of a child decisively change the previous life and study planning of the (future) parents. They have to cope with a wealth of new challenges and many individual questions need to be answered. The Studierendenwerk Greifswald supports you in this life situation and offers you important information about studying with a child.

According to the 19th Social Survey of the Deutsches Studentenwerk, 5% of students at German universities have children, 7% of them are single parents.

Many young women without children understandably devote themselves first to their career after studying or doing a doctorate; it is not without reason that so much is currently being said about childless academics. Of course, everyone has to decide for themselves whether children are a possible "strategy" for their studies. In addition, it is of course not easy to plan for children.

The following pages should provide you with basic information. They offer a basis for making a decision to plan a study with a child quite consciously or serve as a guide to find quick help if you are already pregnant or in a conflict situation.

If you have any further questions, the social counselling service of the Studierendenwerk is at your disposal.

You can find all important information about studying with a child in our brochure.
