KfW student loan

With the KfW student loan, the "KfW-Förderbank" provides a nationwide loan offer for all students. The KfW student loan is intended to help finance the cost of living during studies - regardless of one's own income and that of one's parents.

What is promoted?

  • First or second degree
  • postgraduate studies (master's degree, additional, supplementary or postgraduate studies)
  • Promotion

Who is being funded?

Students of full age who meet the following criteria:

  • Study at a state or state-recognised higher education institution based in Germany
  • Enrolment for full-time or part-time studies
  • German citizenship
  • Maximum age: 44 years (higher age is possible, as semesters already completed will be credited)

Information for students without German citizenship:

You can be sponsored if you:

  • are a family member of a German or EU citizen and are staying with him/her in Germany (for further information, please contact the Studierendenwerk)
  • are citizens of an EU country and have been permanently resident in Germany for at least 3 years
  • are a student with non-German nationality who has acquired their university entrance qualification in Germany or at a German school abroad.

How is support provided?

Students can freely determine the amount of the monthly payment between 100 and 650 €. First or second degree courses can be financed over a maximum of 14 semesters, depending on the age at the time of application. The financing of a master's degree, a supplementary, supplementary or postgraduate course of study as well as a doctorate extends over a maximum of 6 semesters. The total loan period can be arranged flexibly and is a maximum of 33 years and 6 months for a first or second degree course (postgraduate studies are different). The KfW Student Loan can be combined with BAföG or the Education Loan.

No collateral is required for the KfW Student Loan.

The application procedure

You can find the application form in the online credit portal of the KfW-Förderbank at www.kfw.de . Based on your application a contract offer will be prepared online. With the printed application and contract offer you go to a KfW sales partner (credit institution or student union). You will also find a list of sales partners at www.kfw.de.

The sales partner forwards your application to the KfW, which then makes the loan decision.
